Why do people go to therapy?

Usually people seek therapy because their problems persist and interfere with their life, or they are too overwhelmed and distressed by whatever situation they are in. Some clients are sent by courts, DYFS, school, or work. Others seek therapy more for self-enlightenment.

Psychotherapy aims to improve an individual’s sense of well-being mentally, emotionally, behaviorally and in relationships. Your well-being also improves your functioning, productivity, happiness, and physical health. The benefit of therapy is that the symptoms of distress decrease, behavior changes, and growth occurs.

If you are struggling or distressed, seeking therapy is the right thing to do for yourself. One of my clients stated that while some people go to get a massage, therapy is her way of pampering herself when she needs it.
